Charles II Oak Chest of Drawers |

This must be one of the oldest chest of drawers I have had, it dates from c1650 the Cromwellian period. I have done some research and ‘John Andrew’s book on British Antique Furniture’ page 69 explains the construction of the drawers etc. which I have used for dating purposes. It is a square fronted chest with ovolo edge and fixed with malleable iron nails above two small over three long drawers. All drawers have ovolo edges and are thickly oak lined with side runners (a groove set in the side of the drawer). There are two original iron locks, which are still in working order with replacement key. There is one original brass escutcheon which has been used as pattern for matching all replacement brass handles and escutcheons. |

The chest was made in two halves for ease of handling and still maintains original spigot joints. |

Obviously over the many years there have been several repairs to the chest, mainly to the drawers, but overall it is a very sound chest and all joints are with made with timber dowels. Very old! |
